Alabama’s nickname is the “Yellowhammer State.”  European explorers named the state after the local ”Alibamu” Indian tribe. The capital of Alabama is Montgomery. Along with the largest city Birmingham, it was a focus for civil rights actions during the 1950s and 60s.

Alabama has 3,596 miles of National Highway System roads. Currently, the United States National Highway System totals 162,140 miles.

The city of Mobile is recognized as the site of America’s oldest traditional Carnival celebration, the Mardi Gras. Mobile first hosted the Mardi Gras in 1703; that is, 15 years earlier than New Orleans.

The Port of Mobile is a deep water port and the 11th busiest port in the nation. It is also the world’s largest forest products terminal, and the greatest wood pulp exporter in the United States.
